Anyone who has been following our work knows that the Newfoundland Trap Skiff is the most sought after of all our wherries. No, this one did not originate in Duck Trap, but she was built traditionally from our plans. This one is open, rather than decked, for ease of maintenance and provide more elbow room for family and friends. Frankly, half of our own Trap Skiffs are decked and half are open like this one, and we would be hard put to say which is the better arrangement.
Overhead views are difficult to come by, but this one shows off her sleek 4:1 proportions that helps her to glide through the water so effortlessly whether under sail or oars.
This detail of her helm shows how spaceous she is–and note the second position for her mizzen mast–an unusually handy detail.
And yes, she is complete with her spars, oars, sails, cleats and lines. The masts are hollow and made of select spruce, and her suit of sails includes a bowsprit and jib. Her EZ Loader boat trailer (see top photo) that has been modified to fit properly. In the interest of full disclosure, the owner tells us that one trailer light might require replacement.

This lovely Trap Skiff has been used with care, and as you can see, is stored out of the elements. Built according to our specifications in 2001, her hull and transom are Lloyd's Register Okoume (that's the good stuff), ribs, thwarts, and floor boards are Sassafrass. Her sails are by Gambel and Hunter (the same sailmaker who makes all of ours). There are two pairs of oars.
She has been sailed about 20 times and is in excellent condition. She is currently in New York, and her owner has graciously offered to help with delivery.
